The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien I think this one counts, as we read it aloud as a family.

I'm not sure what to say about this that hasn't been said. This one is one of my perennial favorites-- perhaps even moreso than the more academic-leaning Lord of the Rings itself.

Loved the movie-- it was nice candy for those of us who love Peter Jackson's vision of Tolkien's world. I think I, like everyone else, wonder how he'll get three movies out of it, but it was entertaining nonetheless to have a beloved book so painstakingly and lovingly rendered as a movie without excising every subplot and detail that didn't move the main narrative forward.

Oh, I should be writing about the book, oh well...
