The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1)
I was looking for some new epic fantasy, I got a few good recommendations from friends, and this series had the best ratings on goodreads, so this is where I started.
...so, this book is a little towards the YA Fantasy, so that has its pros and cons...
Basically, once you get past the fact that this is another entrant in the orphan-boy-whom-nobody-likes-but-has-unusual-skills-is-taken-on-into-a-mysterious-new-profession-by-a-gruff-but-lovable-outcast, the book's pretty great.
It's candy, to be sure, but page-turning candy. Good fun swordplay, etc. etc.
